Past is the Lord
A Comprehensive Theory
Is there a supreme power that controls nearly all my actions? Yes, there is one as far as I know. It is my past. I do not exist independent of my past. I do not function independent of my past. I do not freely react to any future event independent of my past. Not only me, the future of everything, I guess, is heavily dependent on its past existence.
We, the men, other animals, birds, fishes, insects, worms and the plants, call ourselves 'living beings'. The term 'living histories' would be a better description of what we are. The word 'being' smacks of a sense of static ness whereas we are a dynamic and continuously evolving systems. Since the present avatar of each one of us is the product of a nearly endless chain of past avatars, generation after generation, we may better be described as 'histories' rather than 'beings'.
Was there a time when nothing whatsoever existed? We have no way to know. With the help of instruments we have, no doubt, been able to look deep into the past. But we do not know if we have reached the beginning of time. We have also been able to look at objects as far as 13 billion light years away. But we do not know if we have seen the outer boundary of the universe. We also do not know if there exists a universe other than the one we know. Our present science tells us that nothing can be created out of nothing and that everything that there is has a past. It is therefore fair to assume that there was no creation. There never was a blank slate.
Past is, therefore, a rock-solid reality. It is there whether you see it or not or whether you measure it or not. Every man or animal, every blade of grass, every drop of water, every molecule of air, every particle of matter and every quantum of energy grew out of its parent/parents. What was there before the first 'something' came into existence is a question outside the realm of science – not because of an arbitrary definition of science but because it is a question that involves pure speculation and no observational evidence.
